KUSANKU KATA : BY GAMINI SOYSA, SRI LANKA.
ReplyDeleteBy Sensei Gamini Soysa
Not too many people know the secret behind Kusanku Katas.
Kusanku(or Kanku) is a special kata for Shurite Styles.
Its especially pertinent to the present study because it was created by Matsumura's Teacher;Sakugawa,so we can reasonably assume that Matsumura learned the original kata from its original author.
The remarkable thing about Kusanku is its reputation as a "NIGHT FIGHTING' kata, in my experience not too many people, even shotokan stylists do not know this part of the Kusanku legend, and there is a reason for that. Shuri's long range impact techniques require light to see by, so it might be more correct to say that Shorin ryu Kusanku to be a night fighting kata.
What do I mean by “Night Fighting"? Night fighting is fighting in the dark, it has three goals.
1. To avoid being caught by the enemy
2. To locate and attack the enemy in the dark; and
3. To remain in control of the enemy until he has been defeated.
In the opening of first 10 moves of the Kusanku(kanku) dai you will see all this moves execute to dislodge, weaken, unbalance, throw and grabbing opponent's arm and first move against multiple attackers.
Attn. Shorin ryu practioners.............................
When you do the Kusanku dai , the first move hit the both hand in front( means.. its bunkai, throwing multiple attackers )and after you go down to the Shiko dachi with palm together (means.. you jab into opponents testicles and throw him), in the mid section of the kata you bring the knee up position and hit the palm together(means.. you avoid the enemy in the dark) and , you lay down on the floor stretch the back leg (means.... you search to attack him..)
